Round 6 of the 2016 Investchem Formula Ford Kent championship takes place at Phakisa Freeway on Saturday, 10 September 2016. While there are still three rounds left in the championship, with a maximum of 66 points still available, the championship chase is turning into a three-way battle.
Current champion Andrew Horne (Xena Chemicals / Budd Power Royale RP31) has finished on the podium in 8 of the 10 races run so far this season and this consistency has allowed him to open up a 20-point lead at the top of the championship table.
His closest rival is David Jermy (Matt Nash Motorsport Van Diemen) who has shown that he is capable of winning races but inconsistency has cost him. Dean Venter (Turnfab Engineering / Manitou Group Mygale) is just a point further back in third who had been having a mediocre season until the fourth round at Phakisa back in July.
Since then Venter has only missed out on one win and that was because he was deemed to have jumped the start in the first race at Red Star last time out. If Phakisa brings another performance like the last couple, he will be in a position to make a serious challenge for the title in the last two rounds.
Business commitments will force the Schofields, Ian and Andy who are fourth and fifth in the championship standings respectively, to miss this round of the championship. This will give Dalan Holton (Debella Finance van Diemen) and Jeff Gable (Taylon Motorsport Van Diemen) a chance to improve their standings.
Allen Meyer (Van Diemen), Paul Schultz (Knottsberry Foods Mygale) and Alex Vos (Ecurie Zoo Swift) round out the top ten on the championship log. The trio are separated by just four points and will all be trying to bag as many points as possible at the 4.24-kilometre-long Free State circuit.
As usual Friday will be a practice day with qualifying and both races taking place on Saturday. The 15-minute qualifying session should get underway at 09h00 on Saturday morning with the first of the two 8-lap races scheduled for 11h20. Assuming everything runs according to plan, the second race will start at 15h15.
