Four weeks after the opening round at Red Star Raceway the 2016 Investchem Formula Ford Kent Championship moves to Zwartkops Raceway, west of Pretoria, for the second round on Saturday, 9 April.
At Red Star the drivers had to learn a new circuit but that won’t be a factor at Zwartkops, most of them know the circuit almost as well as they know the backs of their hands.
At the opening round it was reigning champion Andrew Horne (Xena Chemicals / Budd Power Royale RP31) and Ian Schofield (Investchem Mygale) who were running at the head of the field and will almost certainly be back there at Zwartkops.
Horne and Schofield had a coming together in the second race at Red Star which dropped Schofield down the field. While he did recover to finish sixth, it allowed Horne to take the early lead on the championship log. Schofield lies second, tied on points with David Jermy (Matt Nash Motorsport Van Diemen) who pushed Horne all the way to the flag in the second race at Red Star.
Dean Venter (Turnfab Engineering / Manitou Group Mygale) had a good run at the opening round, coming home in third place in both races. He should be there or thereabouts at Zwartkops and could improve his fourth spot in the championship.
Others who can run with the best on their day include Jeff Gable (Taylon Motorsport Van Diemen), Dalan Holton (Debella Finance van Diemen), Paul Schultz (Knottsbury Foods van Diemen), Allen Meyer (Van Diemen) and Joe Nash (Swift).
With 14 cars on the entry list fans should be treated so some spectacular single seater racing at Zwartkops.
As usual Friday will be a practice day with qualifying getting underway at 08h50 on Saturday morning. The two races are both 10-lappers, the first one at 11h45, while the lights should go out to signal the start of race 2 at 15h00.
