The Midas South African Single-Seaters (SASS) took advantage of the long Phakisa Freeway circuit to produce some high-speed racing in the Free State on Saturday. The Formula Volkswagen and Formula 1600 class A and B racers were in action in South Africa while SASS competitor Jayde Kruger took on Snetteron in Norfolk.
Kruger raced on Saturday and Sunday while his South African counterparts competed only on Saturday. Race one for Kruger on Saturday at Snetteron saw him cross the line for sixth after he and Ashley Sutton touched on the opening lap. Kruger had rallied well after experiencing mechanical problems in the testing session to qualify at the head of the field, so dropping to sixth from such a strong start was disappointing.
Kruger again showed his determination as a racing driver by posting a fourth place finish in race two and moving up to second spot in the last race of the weekend, dealing well with the pressure to keep improving his results against very stiff competition.
Round five of the season saw Robert Wolk (1 – Midas / Chemical Logistics / ATE) return to form, top of the qualifying sheets and also taking the race one victory. Wolk appears to have successully shaken off the issues that plagued him in East London and set a cracking pace in the Free State.Second across the finish line in the first race was Werner Scholtz (3 – Motorvia / Investchem) ahead of Jason Campos (19 – Hollard Insurance). Not to be outdone, series leader Nicholas van Weely (87 – Anglorand) took charge in race two to claim the race victory – and keep the top spot on the championship log by 12 points – with Wolk taking second ahead of Campos.
Wolk has sent a clear message, he is back in form and determined to swing the balance of power back in his favour, setting up the remaining three rounds of the championship for serious wheel-to-wheel action between himself and Van Weely.
The Formula 1600 saw Scott Temple (03 – Investchem) take charge in class A with two race victories, extending his championship lead over Keegan Campos (02 – Hollard Insurance). Campos wasn’t making it easy on the championship leader though, close on Temple’s heels in each of the races he claimed second place finishes in each of the races ensuring that Temple’s lead did not become too great.
Bevan Williams (36 – Riglliams (36 – Rightway Auto-Electrical) held his ground to round out the top three in each of the races, claiming third place each time – in the process making the overall results in this class identical to both race results with Temple at the top, followed by Campos and Williams.
The battle for third was a tense affair with Wlliams trading positions in each race with Graham Hepburn (04 – Suburban Bodyshop). Unfortunately for Hepburn, going off the track at the same place in each race forced him down the finishing order.
Class B proved a bit lonely for Rick Morris (08 – Investchem) whose usual sparring partner, Ian Schofield (09 – Investchem) was forced to miss the race meeting due to illness. Morris was uncontested in each of the races with Allen Meyer (15) taking third and second in each of the races and young Timothy Gillespie (71) sthe series and on just his first visit to Phakisa.
The SASS field will head to Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday, 30 August, for round six of the series, where the short, narrow circuit will make for another exciting chapter in the 2014 season.
