A trip to the Mpumalanga Highveld awaits the Investchem Formula Ford Kent competitors for the final round of their 2015 championship on Saturday, 28 November. It will be a new experience for them when they make their way out onto the Red Star Raceway in Delmas.
The 4 –kilometre long Red Star Raceway was designed primarily as a bike circuit but has been used to host four-wheeled competition this year and, with Kyalami still undergoing renovation, the organizers of the Midas Historic Tour opted to move the final event of the season. Tight and twisty sections coupled with some long straights will place the emphasis on set-up at a track which most of the drivers will experience in a race car for the first time during the Friday practice sessions.
Andrew Horne (Xena Chemicals / Budd Power Royale) made sure of the 2015 title at the last round which was held at Phakisa Freeway in October but the fight for the runner’s up spot is still raging. Ian Schofield (Investchem Mygale) leads that battle at the moment with a six-point advantage over Matthys Strydom (Sage ERP Africa Talon). Graham Hepburn (Suburban Body Shop Ray) didn’t score any points in Welkom last time out after a coming together with Schofield in the opening race damaged his car too badly for it to be repaired in time for race two. Despite this, he still holds fourth place on the championship log just seven point behind Strydom. With a maximum of 22 points available on the day any of the three could end the season as the runner up.
Behind the leading quartet the battle for the rest of the top eight positions is just as fierce with four drivers separated by just four points. Dean Venter (Manitou Group Swift) was right up with the leaders at Phakisa and his best points haul of the season has seen him move up into six place, just a point behind David Jermy in the Matt Nash Motorsport Van Diemen. Jeff Gable (Taylon Motorsport Van Diemen) is another point further back with Dalan Holton (Copper Lake Breweries) two point back from Gable in eighth.
Practice sessions will take place on Friday with qualifying getting underway at 09h25 on Saturday morning. The first of the two 8-lap races is scheduled to begin at 11h45 while race two should get underway at 16h30.
